Chapter 2: Today's Students

How does gender influence students?

Chapter two in Joy of Teaching by Gene Hall discusses how gender influences students in today's schools. Hall first defines gender as the behavioral, cultural and psychological traits typically associated with one sex. Then he continues the section on gender by discussing the differences between men and women, and the debate surrounding the cause of those differences. The debate is a two sided debate with nurture theorists on one side and nature theorists on the other. The nurture theorists blame our culture which values masculinity in men and a sort of balancing act in women. On the other hand, nature theorists believe that boys and girls are born with "hemispheric differences" in their brains. In the end nobody knows for sure exactly why but men tend to be better at math, science and sports while girls excel at reading, writing, and floating on water.
